Refrigerator Making Noise: Which Sounds Are Normal?

Gurgling, clicking, buzzing or rattling: some fridge noises are normal and some are warnings. Learn which is which before a small fault becomes a costly one.

Refrigerator Making Noise: Which Sounds Are Normal?

Short answer: Gurgling, occasional cracking and a steady low hum are normal fridge sounds: refrigerant flowing, plastic expanding and the compressor running. Repeated clicking with no cooling, loud buzzing, grinding, rattling from the back or a scraping noise from the freezer are not normal and usually point to a failing relay, a fan hitting ice, a loose part or a worn fan motor.

Normal Sounds

  • Gurgling or bubbling: refrigerant moving through the pipes

  • Cracking or popping: plastic expanding and contracting, especially during defrost

  • Low, steady hum: the compressor running; louder on inverter fridges when pulling down temperature

  • Water dripping or sizzling: defrost meltwater, briefly, on frost-free fridges

Sounds That Need Attention

  • Click, then silence, repeating every few minutes, with no cooling: the compressor can't start. Usually the relay or overload. Compressor warning signs

  • Scraping or ticking from the freezer: the evaporator fan blade is hitting ice, which points to a defrost fault

  • Rattling from the back or bottom: loose compressor mounts, a drain pan, or something touching the pipes

  • Loud, constant buzzing: compressor struggling, often from low voltage or a failing component

  • Squealing or grinding: a worn fan motor bearing

Should I switch off a noisy fridge?

Only if you smell burning or the noise is a harsh grind. Otherwise keep it running and book a check.
