AC Compressor Repair & Replacement by a Vijayawada Service Center technician

The compressor sits inside your AC's outdoor unit and does the heaviest lifting in the whole system. It's also the most expensive part to replace, which is exactly why it gets blamed too quickly. A humming outdoor unit with no cooling sounds like a dead compressor, but in the majority of cases we see, the compressor is fine and a ₹500 capacitor is not.

We test the whole starting circuit before we say the word "compressor". All AC repairs

What Usually Stops a Compressor From Running

Run Capacitor

The capacitor gives the compressor (and often the outdoor fan) the kick it needs to start and run. Heat, age and voltage fluctuations weaken capacitors, and Vijayawada's summers are hard on them. A failing capacitor produces a hum, repeated tripping or a compressor that starts only sometimes. We measure its capacitance, and replacement takes minutes.

Contactor

The contactor is a switch that connects power to the compressor when the thermostat calls for cooling. Burnt or pitted contacts, sometimes with insects or a gecko trapped inside, stop power reaching the compressor.

Overload Protector and Wiring

A tripped or faulty overload, or a loose or burnt terminal connection, keeps the compressor off.

Inverter Drive (Inverter ACs)

Inverter compressors are powered by an inverter board, not a capacitor. A board fault looks exactly like a compressor failure until it's properly tested. AC PCB repair

Gas and Pressure Problems

Very low gas can trigger protection that stops the compressor. Overcharged systems or a blocked condenser can trip it on high pressure. Fixing these protects the compressor.

When the Compressor Itself Has Failed

We confirm compressor failure with winding resistance, insulation-to-ground and current tests. Typical signs are a shorted or open winding, a compressor that's seized and won't turn even with a good capacitor, or one that runs but can't build pressure.

What Replacement Involves

  1. Recover the refrigerant
  2. Remove the old compressor and fit a new one of the correct capacity and type
  3. Replace the drier or filter where fitted, and flush if the old compressor burnt out
  4. Braze, pressure-test with nitrogen and vacuum the system
  5. Charge fresh refrigerant to specification
  6. Test current, pressure and cooling performance

Expect four to six hours, sometimes with the outdoor unit taken to a safe working area.

Compressor or New AC?

An honest guide:

  • AC under 6 years old: replace the compressor, especially if it's still under the manufacturer's compressor warranty (many brands offer 5–10 years on the compressor, so check your card first)
  • 6 to 10 years: depends on overall condition and whether it's an inverter model
  • Over 10 years, non-inverter: often better to put the money toward a new inverter AC, which will also cut your power bill

Costs

Indicative charges : run capacitor ₹600 – ₹1,200, contactor ₹600 – ₹1,200, compressor replacement with gas ₹8,000 – ₹14,000 for 1–1.5 ton non-inverter, ₹10,000 – ₹18,000 for inverter or 2 ton. All AC charges

Questions

Is my AC compressor under warranty?

Many brands give a long compressor warranty. Check your warranty card; if it's covered, the brand's service is the better route for the compressor itself.

Can a compressor be repaired instead of replaced?

The compressor is sealed, so internal faults mean replacement. But most "compressor problems" are actually the capacitor, contactor or board, which are repairable.

Why did my compressor fail?

Common causes: long-term low gas, voltage swings, a blocked condenser making it overheat, or moisture left in the system during a poor installation.
