Short answer: Signs of a compressor problem include a fridge that clicks every few minutes without cooling, a compressor that hums but never starts, one that runs nonstop with weak cooling, or one too hot to touch. But the most common cause of these symptoms is not the compressor itself; it's the starting relay, overload protector, capacitor or, on inverter fridges, the control board. Proper testing tells them apart.
Warning Signs
- Click, pause, click every few minutes, no cooling: relay or overload trying and failing
- Humming without starting: weak start capacitor or a seized compressor
- Running all the time, weak cooling: low gas, dirty condenser or a worn compressor losing efficiency
- Very hot body plus poor cooling: overheating from poor ventilation, low voltage or internal wear
- Tripping the MCB: shorted winding (needs immediate attention)
Why Diagnosis Matters
A compressor replacement can cost ₹4,500 – ₹10,000. A relay costs a few hundred. Our technicians measure winding resistance, insulation and starting current before calling a compressor dead, and we show you the readings. How we test before replacing
How long does a fridge compressor last?
Typically 10 to 15 years, longer with good ventilation and stable voltage.
Can I help it last longer?
Keep 10 cm of space around the fridge, clean the condenser yearly, and use a stabiliser if your voltage fluctuates.
