The single-door fridge is the quiet hero of thousands of Vijayawada kitchens. No fans, no digital display, no Wi-Fi. Just a freezer box at the top, a thermostat knob, and a compressor that hums along for fifteen years if you treat it reasonably.
When one stops cooling, the fix is usually straightforward. These fridges have fewer parts, and the parts are inexpensive. We repair direct-cool single-door fridges from Godrej, Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, Haier, Kelvinator, Voltas Beko, Panasonic and more. All refrigerator repairs
What Goes Wrong With Single-Door Fridges
A direct-cool fridge cools by natural convection: the cold freezer box chills the air around it, cold air sinks, and the whole compartment cools without a fan. Simple design, simple faults.
Not Cooling, Compressor Silent
The most common reason by far is a failed starting relay or overload protector, the small part clipped to the side of the compressor. You may hear a click every few minutes as it tries and fails. Replacing the relay set is quick and cheap, and it brings a surprising number of "dead" fridges back to life. After that, the thermostat is the next suspect.
Cooling Weakly
Usually a dirty condenser at the back, a worn door gasket, or a thermostat that's drifted. In older fridges, a slow gas leak is possible, but we test before assuming it.
Thick Ice in the Freezer
Some ice is normal in a direct-cool fridge, which is why they need manual defrosting every couple of weeks. Ice that builds very fast points to a gasket that isn't sealing, a door left slightly open, or a thermostat stuck on the coldest setting. Why ice builds up inside a fridge
Fridge Sweating Outside
Condensation on the outer body, especially around the door, comes from humid monsoon air meeting a cold surface. A gasket gap makes it much worse. If it's heavy and constant, get the gasket checked.
Water at the Bottom of the Fridge
The small drain hole at the back of the compartment is blocked. A pipe cleaner or a gentle flush clears it.
Running Nonstop, Never Switching Off
Thermostat fault, dirty condenser, or a fridge set on the coldest setting in a hot kitchen. We'll check which.
Repair or Replace?
Single-door fridges are among the most repairable appliances in your home. A relay, thermostat or gasket is a modest bill, and a healthy fridge will keep going for years afterwards.
The one decision that needs thought is a compressor failure on a fridge more than twelve years old. Compressor replacement with gas charging is a significant cost, and newer fridges use much less power. We'll give you both figures and our honest recommendation. Compressor repair
Keep It Running Longer
- Defrost when ice reaches about 5 mm
- Never chip ice with a knife; one slip can puncture the freezer box and its gas line
- Leave space behind for air to flow
- Use a stabiliser in areas with frequent voltage dips
- Keep the thermostat on a middle setting; the coldest setting isn't needed in daily use

My fridge clicks every few minutes but doesn't cool. What's wrong?
Almost always the relay or overload protector, sometimes the compressor itself. It's worth a technician's visit before considering anything expensive.
Can a knife puncture really cause a gas leak?
Yes, and it's one of the most common causes of leaks in single-door fridges. The gas line runs right through the freezer box walls.
Do you repair old Godrej and Kelvinator fridges?
Are you an authorised service centre?
No, we're an independent multi-brand repair service.
