Ice cream frozen rock-solid. Milk going sour in the door. If that's your double-door fridge right now, you're looking at the single most common frost-free fault we repair, and the good news is that it's very rarely the expensive one people fear.
Double-door fridges are frost-free, which means they cool in a completely different way from the old single-door models. Understanding that difference is the key to fixing them properly, so let us explain it in two minutes. All refrigerator repairs
How a Frost-Free Fridge Actually Cools
There's only one cold coil in a double-door fridge, the evaporator, and it sits hidden behind a panel in the freezer. A small fan blows air across it, and ducts carry some of that cold air down into the fridge section. A damper or flap controls how much goes down.
To stop that coil icing up, the fridge automatically warms it every few hours with a defrost heater, controlled by a timer or board and a defrost sensor. Melted water runs down a drain to a tray near the compressor, where it evaporates.
So when the fridge section warms up but the freezer stays cold, the compressor and gas are usually fine. The cold just isn't getting downstairs.
Freezer Cold, Fridge Section Warm
Three likely causes:
- Evaporator fan has stopped. Open the freezer and listen; you should hear a soft whirr with the door switch pressed. Silence suggests a dead fan motor.
- Defrost system has failed. The coil ices up completely, blocking air. You may see thick frost on the freezer's back panel. The heater, defrost sensor or timer/board is at fault.
- Damper or air duct blocked. Stuck flap, or ice and food packets blocking the vent.

Both Sections Warm
Now we look at the compressor circuit: relay, overload, inverter board on inverter models, and then gas pressure. A dirty condenser can also cause weak cooling in both sections during peak summer.
Water Under the Vegetable Crisper
The defrost drain is blocked, usually with ice or food debris. The meltwater overflows into the fridge instead of the drain tray. We flush and clear it, and check the drain heater where fitted.
Ice on the Freezer's Back Wall, or Frosted Food
A defrost fault, or warm humid air getting in through a damaged gasket or a door left ajar. Both are fixable.
Fridge Freezing Vegetables
A damper stuck open or a failing thermistor tells the board the fridge is warmer than it is. Recalibration or a sensor replacement fixes it.
Inverter Double-Door Fridges
Most newer double-door fridges from LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Haier and Godrej use inverter compressors driven by an electronic board. These fridges are efficient and quiet, but the board is sensitive to voltage spikes.
When an inverter fridge stops cooling, we test the inverter board and compressor separately with the right tools. A failed board is often cheaper to repair or replace than people expect, and a healthy compressor is far too often replaced by guesswork. We'll show you the test results.
Convertible Models
Samsung's Convertible and similar models can switch freezer space to fridge mode. Extra sensors and dampers mean extra possible faults, and we handle these too. Samsung refrigerator repair
Costs and Questions
Typical double-door repairs : defrost heater ₹900 – ₹1,800, defrost sensor ₹600 – ₹1,200, evaporator fan motor ₹1,000 – ₹2,500, drain clearing ₹400 – ₹700, gasket ₹1,500 – ₹3,000, inverter PCB ₹2,500 – ₹6,000, gas leak repair and charging ₹2,500 – ₹4,500. All fridge repair charges
Can I fix it by switching the fridge off for a day?
Temporarily, yes. If the defrost system has failed, unplugging for 24 hours melts the ice and the fridge cools again for a few days. Then the ice returns. It confirms the diagnosis, but the faulty part still needs replacing.
Is it a gas problem?
If the freezer is properly cold, almost certainly not. Be wary of anyone who wants to charge gas in that situation.
Which double-door brands do you repair?
LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Godrej, Haier, Bosch, Panasonic, Voltas Beko and more. We're independent and not a brand's authorised centre.
