Refrigerator Door Seal Problems and What They Cost You

A tired door gasket quietly raises your power bill and frosts your freezer. Learn the paper test, the warning signs and when a replacement makes sense.

Refrigerator Door Seal Problems and What They Cost You

Short answer: A worn refrigerator door seal (gasket) lets warm, humid air in. The fridge runs longer, uses more electricity, builds ice faster and may sweat on the outside. Test it by closing the door on a sheet of paper at several points: if the paper slides out easily anywhere, the seal isn't gripping. Cleaning sometimes restores it; otherwise a replacement typically costs ₹1,200 – ₹3,000 .

Signs Your Gasket Is Failing

  • Paper slides out freely in the paper test
  • Visible cracks, tears, or flattened sections
  • Black mould in the folds that won't wipe away
  • Water droplets or sweating on the outside of the door edge
  • Faster frost build-up and longer compressor running
  • The door doesn't swing shut on its own

Before Replacing, Try This

  1. Clean the gasket with warm, mildly soapy water and an old toothbrush, especially in the folds.
  2. Check the fridge tilts very slightly backward so the door closes by itself.
  3. Check that door shelves aren't overloaded and dragging the door down.
  4. For a slightly flattened gasket, gentle warmth from a hair dryer can sometimes help it regain shape. Don't overheat it.

If it still fails the paper test, replacement is the fix. It's worth it: a sealing gasket pays back through lower bills.

Can I buy a gasket and fit it myself?

You can, but an exact match for your model and correct fitting matter. A poorly fitted gasket is no better than the old one.
