Short answer: The most common LG washing machine problems are drain errors (OE), water inlet errors (IE), unbalanced loads (UE) and door lock errors (dE). OE and IE are often fixed by cleaning the drain filter or the inlet mesh. UE usually needs the load rearranged. If a code keeps returning, the drain pump, inlet valve, door lock or motor sensor needs a technician.
Problems You Can Often Fix Yourself
OE (drain): clean the drain filter at the bottom front and check the hose isn't kinked
IE (inlet): open the tap fully and clean the mesh where the hose joins the machine
UE (unbalance): spread the clothes evenly; avoid washing a single heavy item alone
CL on the display: child lock is on, not a fault; hold the child lock button(s) per your manual
Smell or grey clothes: run Tub Clean monthly and use front-load detergent in front-loaders
Problems That Need a Technician
OE or IE that returns after cleaning: drain pump or inlet valve
dE codes repeating: door lock assembly
LE (motor locked) or a drum that jerks: often the Hall sensor on Direct Drive motors, sometimes the stator
tE / PE / FE: heater, temperature sensor, pressure sensor or inlet valve stuck open
Loud roar during spin: drum bearings
LG's Direct Drive motor is repairable in parts: the Hall sensor, stator and rotor are replaced individually, so a "dead motor" rarely means a whole new one. Many LG motors also carry a long warranty, so check your card. More detail on our LG washing machine repair page
